🌾 World Rural Development Day 2025: Championing Rural Resilience and Food Security in East Africa

Every July 6th, the world commemorates World Rural Development Day: A moment to reflect on the vital contributions of rural communities to food security, environmental stewardship, and sustainable economic development.

Rural areas are home to the majority of the world’s agricultural producers. They feed nations, protect ecosystems, and preserve indigenous knowledge. Yet, these communities often face disproportionate challenges, from inadequate infrastructure and climate vulnerability to limited access to education, healthcare, and markets.

This day is a powerful reminder that sustainable development cannot be achieved without rural inclusion

💡 Why Rural Development Matters

Rural areas in East Africa hold immense potential. With the right investment, policies, and community-driven innovation, they can be transformed into hubs of productivity and sustainability. At Sustainet Group, our mission is to empower these communities through inclusive, evidence-based, and locally tailored interventions.

🌱 Our Work in Rural Development

Currently, we are implementing two impactful projects that directly contribute to rural resilience, climate-smart agriculture, and food security:

🧑🏽‍🌾 Soil Protection and Rehabilitation (ProSoil – Kenya)

The ProSoil Kenya project focuses on improving soil health and restoring degraded land in rural farming communities across Kenya. Through:

  • Promotion of sustainable land use techniques

  • Adoption of agroecological farming practices

  • Capacity building for community-led soil conservation

This initiative equips smallholder farmers with the tools to improve productivity, enhance food security, and adapt to climate change while restoring ecosystem integrity.

🌾 Climate Resilient Food Security Project (CFSP – Somalia)

In Baidoa, Somalia, the CFSP is actively working with rural communities in Berdaale, Horseed, and Isha villages, areas selected for their agricultural potential and access to water.

The project focuses on:

  1. 🌿 Climate-smart agriculture practices
  2. 💧 Efficient water use technologies
  3. 🏭 Development of agro-processing value chains

In a region affected by recurrent drought, internal displacement, and food insecurity, this project is building sustainable rural livelihoods and enhancing resilience to climate shocks.

🌍 Reaffirming Our Commitment

As we mark World Rural Development Day 2025, we at Sustainet Group renew our commitment to supporting thriving rural communities across East Africa. Our work is rooted in the belief that sustainable development begins in the village, on the farm, and within empowered local communities.

We call upon partners, governments, and development actors to continue investing in inclusive rural development, ensuring no community is left behind.
